Asma Jahangir was a staunch defender of human rights, prominent lawyer and pro-democracy activist. Her death is an incalculable loss to the Pakistani society.
Jahangir was an iron lady in her own right. She was brave, fearless, one who stood against the odds, for the rights of the less privileged, democratic values and rule of constitution at various times. And she was highly respected in Pakistan and globally for her stand against extremist groups.
Her life story is an inspiration. She was the president of Pakistan's Supreme Court Bar Association and chairwoman of Human Rights Commission. Her most notable case was about missing persons, for which she did not charge any fees from the affected families. Principles, not money, guided Asma Jahangir. She stood up for people that are hardly cared for. She chose legal profession to offer help to those who needed quality legal assistance, and many a time didn't charge needy and deserving clients. She was an iconic person, one who would be remembered fondly for her willingness and steely determination to defend the vulnerable.
