WhatsApp calling would be good for people and businesses

It would be a good idea to allow WhatsApp calling in the UAE (UAE may soon lift its ban on WhatsApp voice calls; KT, Nov 7). It is essential, actually. The UAE is a wonderful place offering multitude of opportunities and, like any modern city, it has its own set of challenges too. Think of the impact high telecommunication costs have on SME cooperation and collaboration internationally. Even in personal lives, there is an added unnecessary strain on relationships with families overseas.

The alternative costs of direct international cellular calls and increased flights home to see family and friends is not an option for the vast majority of residents. The lack of video communication and VOIP has an unimaginable impact on the economy and society.

Bravo to the people behind this initiative and finally bringing Dubai to an international level on perhaps the most important things of all: communication.

*Good news for everyone if authorities decide to unblock Skype and other video call apps. Many here face difficulty when it comes to communicating with loved ones back home.
