There is no doubt that Totok is an excellent app and I am certain that the app jumped straight to the top league of downloaded apps due to its full features, regional customisation, and ease of use that it inherited from, by the open admission of the founders, Yeecall as a core foundation (ToTok founder explains why app was allowed in UAE; KT, Dec 29). In terms of coding, having a close link with Yeecall should not be a problem, but we must remember that Yeecall is a Chinese state-approved app (in a country where all other mainstream communication apps are blocked) and the servers are the weak link through which the state can intercept when required. However, what ToTok co-founder Giacomo Ziani fails to explain or even address is whether Totok is true to end to end encryption and more importantly, what is the location of the servers. I would also be interested to know who the two 'local sponsors' are because there seems to be no revenue stream in the short-term. This kind of setup that involves large data processing and storage costs involves significant capital investment.
