From a personal perspective, I would equate solitude to freedom. The freedom to discover yourself with no outside interference. Spending time alone is important. When one spends time alone, one gets answers to many unanswered questions. In solitude, we don't need anyone or anything - 'one is complete.'
Solitude, to some, means loneliness, but if you approach your time in solitude with the expectations that you will grow stronger, more confident, more empathic, and more disciplined, then your time will not be wasted.
