The news report Suicide suspected as teen falls to death from Sharjah high-rise (KT, Dec 8) points at the problem of depression among teenagers in our society today. Someway or the other, these teenagers are victims of stress. They may not be sharing their problems and issues with their parents due to the fear of being rebuked or a rough response. But the tragic fate of such children can be unbearable for parents. Will the parents ever find any peace in their lifetime after such incidents? We can identify early symptoms of depression when children start withdrawing from social interactions and show less cheer for things around. However, parents can notice such a change if there is constant communication between the two.

*Exams are not the only sources of happiness, and we as parents must realise it. Children especially in their teenage expect a sort of friendly attitude from their parents and if the parents are rude, unable to empathise and understand the concerns of children, it could lead to a rift in the relationship. Giving too much importance to studies and assessment results can pass on emotional anxiety to children. Each child is unique and we should try to explore their talent and potential. We should educate them morally so that they can overcome challenges they face. Such wisdom can only be imparted by the parents and cannot be given by institutes.
