Every morning we wake up hoping this pandemic was a bad dream only to realise the virus has killed another few thousand all over the world. We cannot lose this war. The master plan for many countries during this pandemic was a Wuhan-like lock down hoping it would eventually 'flatten the curve'. In certain countries it was partially successful. However, this apparent flattening can give way to larger peaks once the lock down is lifted. WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus commented, "Make no mistake, we have a long way to go. This virus will be with us for a long time."
So how long will that be? Perhaps a year, or even more. The world will never be the same again. Statistically, if there was an option to test every human being on earth, the number of positive cases will be in billions. So, what is the solution? How long can we lockdown and hide inside our homes? Eventually countries will have to ease the lockdown and let people travel. The virus will force humans out of their homes once they have exhausted their supplies. Hence the only solution to the problem is to face it and live with it. We have to be bold, but not stupid.
Our aim should be to reduce the number of deaths by acting wisely. The army should be individuals less than 60 years of age. The fragile cannot be obviously recruited, hence the young will have to lead from the front. Our weapons will be soaps, sanitizers and face masks. Our backup is an intact immune system and a supportive health care system. The chief strategy is social distancing. We should spy on the enemy by research, viral genome sequencing, drug and vaccine trials. Our enemy is SARS-CoV-2, but we have to fight against human stupidity, hatred, bigotry, racism, violence and terrorism. -Praveen Sreekanthalal, Abu Dhabi
