Give your children the confidence to talk and discuss matters with you

It only sends shivers down my spine to read incidents where children are committing suicide, running away from home at a young age (#FindingAmeya: The teen is back. Now let's introspect; KT, Nov 25). All this boils down to poor parenting. Children need some amount of freedom because they are close to becoming adults and need to have different experiences in order to learn from them. Life is getting more competitive and challenging with time but a lot of children are still expected to adhere to their normal routine and education.

Not all children are born with the same mind. Some are weak, some are intelligent. So parents should not pressurise their children to score 100 per cent. During my school days, I recall the number of tuitions and exams I had to attend and run from one place to another, complete projects, assignments and lots more. But now education styles have changed. The thinking pattern has changed. You have everything available on your smartphones, all the information at the click of a button.

Children should be given some amount of freedom, and parents should learn to trust them with decision-making. Maturity comes with experience and age.

Parents have to keep an eye on the children but at the same time they should give them some personal space and develop trust and confidence with them so that they can talk and discuss openly.
