Find purpose, explore hobbies to defeat boredom in sunset years

The article When emptiness conquered my nest, I befriended time (KT, Nov 22), made an engaging read. With busy motherhood demands, one doesn't realise the passage of time.

Children grow up and leave home to pursue education or career. The empty nest hits mothers, and parents in general, hard who are usually not accustomed to an abundance of 'me-time'. The killing silence and the acceptance of the fact that children have wings of their own takes a while to sink in. There's a lot more time to think about many things that were not prioritised when children were growing up. The best way to cope with the sudden vacuum is to befriend me-time and pursue hobbies and interests. Social obligations can also keep one creatively engaged. Exercises, yoga, or other forms of physical activity allow a better sense of focus and acceptance. Finding a purpose and something that is larger than life creates a sense of self-worth.
