The opinion article 'Fakedemic' should worry countries and communities (KT, April 3) is so relevant when the world is reeling with the dire effects of Covid-19 pandemic. The volume of fake news circulating in the social media is unimaginable. Stay at home seems to have given license for some to use their creativity in fake ways. This fakedemic becomes viral within seconds and results in hardships to people who are actually involved in fighting the pandemic.
The effects of fakedemic can cause a series of unseen situations and behaviours. There should be censorship even for social media platforms especially when the world is undergoing a turmoil of this kind. Good sense and rational thinking appear to have taken a back seat as even the educated people are falling prey to the fakedemic. -Latha Narasimhan, Sharjah
