City of Taj Mahal will always be remembered as Agra

Filed on November 27, 2019 | Last updated on November 27, 2019 at 06.51 pm

It is surprising that the state government in Uttar Pradesh, India, is now mulling to change the name of Agra city to Agravan. Earlier they had changed the name of the city of Allahabad to Prayagraj and the Mughalsarai Railway Station to Deen Dayal Upadhyay junction.

The state government has now tasked the Ambedkar University in Agra to study historical facts, and other historians and experts have also been empanelled to give their inputs. The Yogi Adityanath government has argued that the historical name of Agra was Agravan, and hence the move was to restore it. However, I feel the Bharatiya Janata Party is wrong in doing this. India has had a rich history, cities in the country had several influences, and the name of the cities reflects the time in history that made them famous.

Agra is popular globally as the city of Taj Mahal. The bid to change the name of cities, especially the ones that are known the world over, disturbs trade experts, tourism industry and a slew of other businesses and people.
