KEEPING ON TOP of all the latest cosmetic industry trends is not only impossibly time consuming, it's expensive. It's fine and dandy looking at commercials for the next magic elixir, although turning it over at the shops and exposing the price tag can often widen your eyes to the extent you will no longer require the corrective cream you desired in the first place.
Never fear, however, Filipino influencer Lady Baltazar is here. Growing up in the US and moving to Dubai around two years ago, the online personality takes to her website and social media to share her likes and advice on various topics from beauty to fashion and travel. Catching up with the local celeb, we spoke about life creating an online presence and asked her to put down a few free beauty tips to save money as well as your appearance.
What is life as an influencer really like? What is the biggest misconception you feel people have about web-based lifestyle gurus?
Most people think influencers have the most amazing, stress-free and perfect lives - always jet-setting in the latest designer items, staying at the most luxurious properties and driving a limited edition car that only a few can get their hands on. While a part of that is somewhat true, influencers have to work hard like most people to be able to deserve and afford this lifestyle. What people don't see off camera is the amount of work we put in and the time we spend producing content for our audiences to enjoy. I can probably compare life as an influencer to that of a film director working towards fulfilling a vision. And I must say, I enjoy having the freedom to express myself, being in control and taking full responsibility of anything I put out in the social world.
What is the message you try and put over your channels?
My goal is to encourage my audience to celebrate beauty as a way of life - it can be in the form of kindness, acceptance, positivity, understanding and generosity. I always strive to be as authentic as I can be in the social world because I want to establish connections and build meaningful relationships with people more than gaining attention.
How did you come up with your DIY summer beauty hacks?
I have attended numerous exclusive seminars and workshops and I am a huge supporter of natural and organic products so the DIY summer beauty hacks I've come up with are for people looking for a more natural way of beautification while still being able to save money.
What is your ultimate ambition with your influencing?
I really look up to women like Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey for using their power for the benefit of others and for using their network as a platform to educate and positively influence their audiences.
Do you have any advice for anyone looking to become an influencer?
Be prepared to take responsibility as it is not just about taking photos and posting random stuff online, rather, it is about helping your audience make better decisions. Also, you need to really have passion, dedication and enthusiasm not just to start but to maintain and keep it up.
Talk us through your Instagram - how many pics do you take before you select one, who takes them and what theme do you try and stick to?
Selecting a photo to post online is one of the hardest decisions I have to make every day. I always consider the choice a big responsibility not only to myself, but to everyone that might come across my post. It must be carefully selected and sensitive to the diversity of my audience. I only feature brands that I truly trust. I also always try to stick with warm tones, and if I'm not using a tripod and a timer, it's usually my friends or photographers I collaborate with who take my photos.
The DIY tips
BANANA + HONEY + LEMON FACE MASK
Peel off a banana and mash it. Combine it with honey and lemon juice then apply to face for about 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
Benefit: Extraordinary summer glow.
Bananas are filled with vitamins and minerals which help nourish, smoothen and brighten the skin. Mix it with honey to help absorb and retain moisture making your skin hydrated; and lemon juice for an extra brightening and lightening property. A must-have to achieve glowing skin this summer.
CUCUMBER EYE MASK
Cut in slices, refrigerate for 15 minutes and apply over your eyes for about 10-20 minutes.
Benefit: Reduced eye puffiness and dark circles.
Cucumber has a natural cooling effect. It helps reduce swelling and rejuvenate dull skin while helping you relax and hydrate the area around your eyes. Now, you don't have to wear those oversized sunnies to hide those dark circles.
TOMATO + CUCUMBER TONER
Mix cucumber juice and tomato pulp. Apply as a toner using cotton balls. Leave for 10 minutes then wash with warm water.
Benefit: Small and tightened pores.
Aside from treating large and open pores, tomatoes help prevent signs of ageing and act as a natural sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Now you can enjoy your time under the sun without worrying about your skin. Win-win!
COCONUT + LIME BODY SCRUB
Mix coconut oil, shredded coconut, plain white sugar and lime juice. Use as a body scrub, rinse and shower after.
Benefit: Smooth and moisturized skin.
Being a natural and gentle exfoliator, coconut helps remove dead cells and prevents flakiness leaving moisturised and hydrated skin. It leaves it smelling great too.
OATMEAL + SALT + LEMON FOOT SCRUB
Mix oatmeal, salt, lemon, baking soda and water into a paste. Gently scrub into rough or dry areas then rinse with water.
Benefit: Smoother and softer feet.
Oatmeal is a great exfoliator and has anti-oxidant properties that can help treat dry skin.
