Dubai ó Teachers have always been revered In Indian tradition. On the eve of Teachersí Day, we examine the role of a teacher from the perspective of Vedanta.

As children grow into formative years, they tend to develop concentration naturally in subjects which he tends to like. Conversely, there will be perceptible lack of concentration in those subjects where he does not feel an emotional connection. Hence, the primary role of a teacher in this context is to make a student fall in love with the subject.

An ideal teacher should have the following two qualities ó he is well established in the fundamentals of the subject and he has the ability to teach and communicate at the level of the student.

The former depends on his study, thinking, reflection and ability to apply the same in his experience. In short, it is directly proportional to his tapas with reference to his subject. He can also enhance this quality retaining his thirst for further knowledge, i.e., by being an eternal student. The latter quality is that which is going to enhance the interest of student in the subject, hence more important. A good teacher has to guide students to see an inherent beauty in subjects. For example, to make them learn math, he has to make the student understand the rationale behind formulas and, if possible, extract it out of the student. The Latin origin of the term Ďeducationí means Ďto draw out (from within)í.

More than half the job of a teacher is done if he ignites the interest for the subject in studentsí minds. Fortunately for Dr APJ Abdul Kalam (and for us), Shri Siva Subramania Iyer, Dr Kalamís school teacher, adopted this method of teaching when he was explaining about the flight of birds.† Salutations to all teachers on the eve of Teachersí Day.
