It was just another weekend night for Nighat Sultana. Her kids and husband, Raja Saeed Ahmad, were at home. Suddenly, she heard a glass fall to the floor and went rushing, only to see her husband fallen flat on his face. The sole breadwinner of the family had died of a cardiac arrest, leaving behind Nighat and four kids, aged 10 to 16, who were distraught and had no money to fall back on. Their story was published in Khaleej Times on January 4, 2020.
Speaking to us, Nighat said, "The day after my husband passed away, my kids had school. I realised that there was no food for their lunch box. I had no money for rent too. I have no family here. My neighbours supported me - and they continue to do so - but managing everything was still tough. I then asked my son to send an email to Khaleej Times, describing our situation. When I got a call from the reporter, I was relieved. After that article, help poured in. People still reach out to us and I am grateful for that."
