In a tragic twist of fate, a Thai man who had won 42 million Thai baht (Dh4.85 million) in a lottery committed suicide after he lost the tickets.

42-year-old Jirawut Pongphan had bought the tickets in November, and invited his friends and family to his house to celebrate.

But the celebration was short-lived, as the man realised after waking up the next day that his tickets were nowhere to be found.

Devastated, Pongphan fell into a deep depression, his combination of stress and sadness leaving him unable to go to work. He then shot himself in the head.

He also left a suicide note which read: "I'm really sorry, please don't bully my family, I did win the lottery prize."

Pongphan had bought seven tickets with the same numbers in the hope of maximising his winnings.
