People from around the world have raised almost a million yuan (Dh500,000) for a Chinese student who was hospitalized after living on 2 yuan (Dh1 approx) a day for five years.
According to the BBC, 24-year-old Wu Huayan survived largely off just chilies and rice while struggling to study, saving the rest of her money to help pay for her younger brother's medical bills. After her story was brought to light, donations reportedly totaling around 800,000 yuan began pouring in for the Guiyang college student.
Huayan weighed barely 20 kilos when she went into a hospital for breathing problems a month ago. Doctors eventually found that she was suffering from heart and kidney problems due to severe malnourishment.
The case has sparked concern and anger, with many concerned for the state of the girl. People were also angry with Chinese authorities for not helping her sooner.
Officials have since released a statement saying that Huayan had been receiving the minimum government subsidy, and would now be getting a 20,000-yuan emergency relief fund.
"We will keep following the case of this strong-minded and kind girl," said the Tongren City Civil Affairs Bureau.
