Travellers passing through Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) will soon be able to breathe a sigh of relief as the airport unveiled its new project aimed to lessen the long queues at immigration gates.
According to Inquirer, the Philippines' Bureau of Immigration launched its E-Gate project to ensure fast travel and accurate border clearing. According to Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente, passengers will be able to breeze through immigration in just 8-15 seconds. Currently, the immigration process takes several minutes to complete.
A video released by the state-owned PTV showed the new E-Gates in action. The gates have informative instructions to guide travellers on how to use them. The gate can only be used by Filipino passengers who carry e-passports. Officials said that the project is still in its 'experimental phase'.
Apart from convenience, the 329 million-peso (Dh22.6 million approx.) project come with modern security features such as facial recognition, biometric scanning, bar code reading, and smart card recognition. These features will help the bureau spot persons of interest such as wanted fugitives, those on immigration watch lists and hold departure lists.
21 E-Gates will be installed in five major airports in the Philippines before the year ends. Of these, 11 will be installed at NAIA Terminal 1 and 3 - the country's gateway to the rest of the world.
