The Philippines recently suspended overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from going to Kuwait after the country's president complained of abuses that Filipino domestic helpers face there.
An administrative order signed by Labour Secretary Silvestre Bello was shared by the Philippine labour department on their Facebook. It states that the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) will suspend the processing of the Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC), a document required to work and travel in other countries.
However, some Filipino workers are exempt from the recent ruling. According to the Manila Bulletin, those who already have plane tickets and OECs are not covered by the suspension. This information was revealed by Raul Francia, the information and publication service direction in the labour department.
Commenting on the suspension, Kuwait Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah said that they regretted remarks made by the Filipino president regarding the Philippine community in Kuwait. He also added that the country has taken legal measures regarding the cases of four Filipinos who were allegedly abused.
