The Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leadership and the government have decided to investigate all Pakistanis named in the Panama Papers through a judicial commission headed by a retired judge, rebuffing the opposition's demand for a probe into the scandal by a serving judge.
On Thursday evening, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar after a marathon huddle with senior leaders of the ruling party finalised the government's counter offensive strategy with three major components: legal, political and administrative measures, to deal with the mounting pressure. PM's daughter Maryam Nawaz who leads a 'think tank' inside Prime Minister House to guide defence of her family on the issue also attended. Media reports said she was unhappy over the passive approach adopted by most cabinet ministers over opposition's onslaught and called for a proactive and aggressive media campaign.
After the meeting, the media was told that an inquiry commission under former Supreme Court judge Sarmad Jalali would be announced within a couple of days.
