According to airport officials, the Emirates plane was departing for Dubai when the incident took place.
"Emirates flight EK615 from Islamabad to Dubai on February 27, 2018, was involved in an incident on ground as passengers were boarding the aircraft. Five passengers and one ground handling staff sustained injuries and were transported to the nearest hospital," the airline said in a statement to Khaleej Times.
According to reports in Pakistani media, those injured were taken to Benazir Bhutto Hospital for medical assistance.
Injured passengers include Muhammad Latif, Kulsoom Beghum, Bilqees Akhtar, Rafia Bibi and loader Qamar, The Express Tribune reported.
According to details by rescue officials, the passengers fell on the runway after the stairway collapsed. An American citizen, identified as 59-year-old Rafia Bibi, suffered head injuries.
"EK615 has been delayed as a result and customers will be rebooked on alternate flights. Emirates apologises for the inconvenience caused. The safety of our customers, crew and staff is of utmost importance and will not be compromised," the Emirates statement added.
