A Perth mother who spanked her nine-year-old daughter with a wooden spoon has been charged with common assault. The 35-year-old mother, Tania, said she felt traumatised and denied prosecution's claim that she hit her daughter very hard.
The incident occurred last October when the woman's daughter took old hamburger meat out of the fridge even after having been told not to. This agitated Tania, who saw her daughter eating the meat, which had worming tablets inside and was meant to be given to their dogs. In a fit of rage, the mother hit the nine-year-old girl with a wooden spoon that left her with a bruise.
"I panicked and out of frustration, having a lot of difficulties with her behaviour I just had a moment of frustration. It was the extreme panic thinking, 'did I put that medication in those burgers?' The fact that she could have been on the floor frothing at the mouth, that was my main thought," WAtoday.com.au quoted the mother as saying in Nine News Perth.
Although the mother pleaded guilty, she revealed she cried most days. "I haven't been the same since, shaking, mortified. There are so many other people out there who deserve to go through what I've gone through and they're sort of putting all their time and effort onto me," she added.
However, post the incident the mother said she still believed in disciplining children. "I believe that discipline helps our society and our children, they've got to learn respect and integrity and you just can't get away with doing naughty stuff," she said.
The Perth Magistrates Court gave the mother a suspended $750 fine and a spent conviction.
