Diwali or Deepavali, the festival of lights, has different religious variations but the festive spirit binds everyone with a common thread of celebrations and happiness. It is celebrated among the Hindu community to mark the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair.
What is Diwali?
The festivities span over five days, starting with Dhanteras, followed by Choti (little) Diwali or Naraka Chaturdasi. Then is the Lakshmi pooja, or what most of the world knows as Diwali, which is followed by Govardhan Pooja or Balipratipad (Padwa), and finally Bhai Dooj.
Dhanteras, auspicious specifically for buying gold, marks the beginning of Diwali. It's a significant day when people buy items made of metal to 'do away with any negativity and bring in good luck'.
Gold is an essential part of the celebrations and is considered to be a symbol of wealth and status and buying it makes for a great investment. Here is a look at the some of the hottest jewellery trends this festive season.
When is Diwali?

In October or November, depending on the cycle of the moon. In 2017, Diwali starts with Dhanteras on October 17. It concludes on October 21. The main festivities take place on the third day (this year, on October 19). Diwali is celebrated a day early in south India, on October 18.
How is it celebrated?

On Diwali, earthen oil lamps light up the neighbourhood, flickering candles brighten up homes; firecrackers illuminate smoke-filled skies, and an exciting feeling of togetherness with family and loved ones pervades the atmosphere.
The rangoli is of utmost importance, owing to its symbolic welcoming of Goddess Lakshmi's first steps into the home - the age-old celebration draws its roots from an interesting belief that the goddess (representing wealth and prosperity) will grace homes on the auspicious day.
Where is it celebrated?

The festival of lights is not just enjoyed and feted in the Indian subcontinent. It is celebrated with much fervour across the world. Interestingly, Diwali is an official holiday in a number of countries such as India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore and Fiji.

Carnival-like celebrations in various countries have endeared Diwali to local cultures as well. Other countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, the Netherlands, Canada, the UK, and US celebrate this festival at a grand scale and with great gaiety.

While South Indians celebrate 'Deepavali' with murukku and legiyam, North Indians commemorate 'Diwali' with chakli and gujiya. Many shops dish out Diwali offerings in the 'home away from home' ambience.

Stores that sell special Diwali items are generally crowded ahead of the festival. The city's prominent Indian designers exhibit extravagant, beautiful Diwali outfits.
