Residents scream in terror as plane debris falls from sky

The metal pieces smashed car windows and injured at least one person.

Residents in Rome were horrified at a 'hailstorm' of metal fragments after debris fell off a Norwegian airlines Boeing 787 plane while taking off on Saturday.
'Hundreds of pieces' of the eight inch fragments littered people's gardens and damaged cars in the area of Isola Sacra as they fell from the jet as it departed Rome's Fiumicino airport.
Quoting local reports, Daily Mail stated one 54-year-old man was hit by a splinter but was fortunate to sustain serious injuries. "They were like bullets. My shirt was on fire," Daily Mail quoted one witness told Italian newspaper Il Messaggero.

According to municipal sources, 25 cars and 12 homes were damaged and residents picked up pieces measuring four to eight inches. "It looked like a strong hailstorm but it was sunny. I went out on the balcony and saw it was a storm of steel and iron. I screamed and ran into the house," another witness said.
The Mayor, Esterino Montino, called for urgent action and wrote on Facebook: "Around 4:40pm on Saturday, an aircraft taking off from the Leonardo da Vinci airport suffered a breakdown and had to return. It lost metal pieces that fell at great speed to the ground, at Via Mariotti in Isola Sacra".
While a spokeswoman for Norwegian airlines confirmed that a flight from Rome to Los Angeles suffered 'technical failure of one of the engines' but landed safely.
