When Meghan Markle walked down the aisle in a spectacular ivory gown coupled with an intricately laced veil, she looked straight of a magical fairytale. The jaw-dropping Givenchy dress designed by Clare Waight Keller is rumoured to cost a staggering £200,000 (Dh 986087 approx) and has now become every bride's dream wedding dress.
But, you need not shell out exorbitantly to get that look. Two seamstresses Elizabeth Alexandrou and Tessa Rankin of Spotlight recreated Meghan's iconic wedding dress for just $700 (Dh2571 approx) in 10 hours. And, their effort is to inspire and encourage people to sew.
Alexandrou said as soon as they got a glimpse of Meghan's dress they started sketching out the design. "Throughout the day we had many discussions on what we thought the style of dress would be," Daily Mail quoted Alexandrou as speaking to FEMAIL.
Although the duo was expecting Meghan's dress to be more complex and intricate, Alexandrou said they were both relieved at the dress' simple elegance. "As soon as Meghan stepped out of the car there was a sigh of relief," she said. "Meghan's style has always been understated elegance and her wedding day was no exception," Alexandrou added.
However, recreating a perfect fit depended on getting the foundations right, Alexandrou revealed, adding the five-metre veil worn by the Royal bride was 'very unique' and offset the simplicity of the gown. The pair then set out to choose the fabric as that was where much of the detail lay.
Talking about the replica, Alexandrou said they used a heavy satin from a newly launched range of Charles Parson's wedding fabric. "We used Duchess satin from the range and were able to get to work to create something similar," Alexandrou said revealing that although their fabric gave the dress a more sculptural look, it was 'quite demanding' to work with. "A little creative thinking was needed to make the fit just so, but we are thrilled with the result," she said, excitedly adding, "We wanted to show the everyday sewer just what was possible."
