Small memory lapses are not a big deal, and sometimes people tend to forget where they had kept even the most obvious of things around the house. And, then what follows is a massive search, just ransacking the entire house to hunt it down. But imagine someone forgetting where they had parked their car for 20 long years!
Back in 1997, a man in Frankfurt, Germany, had reported to the police that his car had been stolen and also looked for it frantically for days. Now, 20 years later, the Frankfurt police authorities tracked down the 'stolen' vehicle only to find that the man had just forgotten where he had parked his car, assuming it to be stolen.
According to reports in Independent, the car was parked in a garage in an old industrial building which was slated for demolition and the car was obstructing the demolition work. The matter was reported to the police who then discovered that the car had been reported as stolen 20 years ago, and tracked down its owner.
The man, now 76-years-old, was driven by the police with his daughter to be reunited with the car which is now no longer functional and had to be scrapped.
"The car can no longer be driven and will be sent to the scrap heap," Frankfurt authorities were quoted saying.
In another such incident in Germany, a man was reunited with his car two years after he parked it and went on a drinking binge in Munich, only to forget where he had parked. He reported it missing and eventually police found the vehicle 4km away from where the man thought he'd parked it. The vehicle had ?40,000 in the boot, along with ?50,000 worth of tools.
While another man from Scotland assumed he lost his car after attending a Stoneroses gig in Manchester and reportedly searched for the vehicle for 5 days before giving up. He eventually reported the car stolen, but it was found six months later, exactly where he had left it.
However, the owner accumulated over £5,000 in fine payment!
