President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has sent a message of condolences to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, on the death of Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary-General.
The 80-year-old Ghanaian passed away peacefully on Saturday after a short illness.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, also sent similar condolence messages to the UN chief.
The Kofi Annan Foundation had announced his death.

Annan, of Ghanaian nationality, died in hospital in Switzerland's Bern, in the early hours of Saturday, two close associates said.
Sheikh Mohamed called him a man of peace and a statesman. He also condoled with Annan's family:

"It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday August 18 after a short illness," the foundation said in a statement.
The UN Migration Agency tweeted: "Today we mourn the loss of a great man, a leader, and a visionary."
Annan was the first black African to take up the role of the world's top diplomat, serving two terms from 1997 to 2006. He later served as the UN special envoy for Syria, leading efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Annan was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with the UN in 2001 "for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world". He was married with three children.
