In a bid to smuggle into Spain from Morocco, a couple stuffed a ten-year-old Palestinian boy in a shopping trolley and covered him under bags of fruits of vegetables.
The Moroccan couple was caught by Spanish police while trying to cross into Spanish city of Melilla in North Africa through the Beni-Enzar border. Police officers grew suspicious of the shopping cart being pulled by the couple as it seemed too heavy and approached them.
According to reports in Daily Mail, when authorities searched the pull-along trolley, they found the boy hidden inside and arrested the couple on trafficking charges. The boy was sent back to his mother who was living in Melilla's temporary migrants' shelter.
It is believed that the boy's mother had paid for him to enter into Europe and it is not known if he had family waiting to pick him up on the other side.
Melilla is a Spanish city sharing a border with Morocco, and has been a hotspot for migrants crossing into EU territories.
