Unable to find a groom, a 40-year-old fitness instructor from Italy got married to herself and spent over £8,700 for the wedding ceremony.
Laura Mesi had made a pact with herself that if she was not able to find her soulmate by the time she turns 40, she would get married to herself. "I told friends and family that if I had not found my soulmate by my 40th birthday I would marry myself," MSN quoted Mesi as saying in Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
Ending her boredom which lasted 20 long years, Mesi walked down the aisle in a traditional white gown, a special ring, and even a white tiered cake, topped with a lone figure of herself. Instead of sulking, the bride celebrated her big day with seventy guests, food and drinks, dancing.
Not only this, Mesi took off to Egypt on her honeymoon post the wedding.
However, she admitted that if she ever meets 'Mr Right' she will happily divorce herself. "If one day I find a man with whom I can plan a future I'll be happy, but my happiness does not depend on him. I firmly believe that each of us must first of all love ourselves. You can have a fairytale even without the prince," she added.
According to reports in The Telegraph, the trend of self-marriage or 'sologamy' is on an increase as recently singles got married to themselves in Australia, The Netherlands, and in United Kingdom.
In 2015, a British PR consultant, Sophie Tanner, also decided to marry herself after escaping an abusive relationship.
"Everyone celebrates getting together with someone and becoming married, but there's no milestone in society that celebrates escaping something awful or returning to your own happiness and contentment," Tanner had said.
