Kindness has become a rare commodity nowadays, even though it is one of the most spontaneous of human virtues.
It was compassion that made a Canadian woman treat a thief to a cup of coffee after she chased him down and later came to know about the wallet-snatcher's plight.
Tess Aboughoushe, a resident of Edmonton, was out on a lunch break. All of a sudden, she saw a struggle down the road, reported CBC News.
"I was walking back to my office and crossing the street and a lady calls out, 'Stop. Thief. He took my wallet'," the Canadian news outlet quoted Aboughoushe as saying. "I didn't stop to think or anything. I just kind of took off after the guy."
The quick-acting Aboughoushe ran to catch the thief, who hid behind a dumpster. When she went near him, the man came out from his hiding and gave the wallet back to her. Aboughoushe told CBC News, "While handing it over, the man was in tears. He said 'Here is the wallet, I can't do this anymore, I'm sorry, just take it, take it'." He was flooded with remorse and kept saying sorry.
After giving the wallet to the woman, Aboughoushe offered him a cup of coffee because she felt "he was distraught and upset". The man, who looked quite lost, told Aboughoushe that he needed money desperately. Not stopping at that, she ensured that social workers take custody of him, not the police.
