Video: Coach prevents US school shooting with a hug

The incident took place on May 17 this year.

A quick-thinking football coach in US averted a tragedy with a bear hug that pacified a suicidal student holding a loaded shotgun. The coach Keanon Lowe, 27, was able to disarm his 19-year-old student, Angel Granados-Diaz, after the latter entered a school campus in Oregon, US, holding the weapon.
Surveillance camera caught Lowe struggling to take the shotgun away from Granados-Diaz before proceeding to hug the distressed student. Realising the student had calmed down, Lowe cleverly took the gun away and handed it to another teacher, according to reports in Metro.co.uk.
The incident that took place on May 17 this year at Parkrose High School created panic among other students who screamed and ran out of their classrooms. After the incident, Lowe later revealed in an interview: 'It was emotional for him, it was emotional for me. In that time, I felt compassion for him. A lot of times, especially when you're young, you don't realize what you're doing until it's over'.

Speaking about how he decided to hug the armed student, the coach said: 'I saw the look on his face, the look in his eyes, I looked at the gun, I realized it was a real gun and then my instincts just took over'. The teacher is being hailed a hero after his brave act saved the life of Granados-Diaz as well as other students present on the campus.
Granados-Diaz was given a three year probationary sentence on Thursday after pleading guilty to felony possession of a firearm in a public building and misdemeanor possession of a loaded firearm in public.
Investigators found Granados-Diaz to be suffering a mental health crisis at the time of the incident, and believed he had brought the gun with the intention of taking his own life and not harming anyone else. He will also receive mental health treatment as part of his sentence.
