A man received a sudden windfall after he sold his 'funky, old shoes' for a staggering $50,000 (Dh180,000 approx). Unknown to him, the shoes happened to be a rare prototype from 1972.
Dave Russell of Sacramento, California said the shoes were given to him when he was 25-years-old. He received it when he participated in an Olympic trials event in 1972, according to a UPI report.
The shoes -- now known as the Nike Waffle Racing Moon Shoes -- were designed by Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman. Only 12 pairs were ever made. Ten of them were given to athletes trying out for the US Olympic team.
"They were very unorthodox shoes. They were very exotic because the sole was completely different. It was made on a waffle iron. It was glued to the bottom of the shoe. The shoe was completely handmade," Russell told a local TV station.
He narrated that he kept the shoes for years in a box in his garage. He only decided to sell it a few months ago. The rare shoe was bought by a collector who is building a Nike museum in the state of Oregon.
