Airline tells mother to 'put baby on floor' on 8-hour flight
The spokeswoman said that the airline cannot guarantee the availability of a bassinet on board.
A mother slammed the British Airways after they told her to carry her five-month-old baby on her lap during an eight-hour flight to Canada and offered to 'put some blankets down'.
Kate Haussauer, 34, booked a premium economy seat to get a bassinet for her son while flying from Heathrow Airport to Toronto on Saturday. However, Haussauer who is due to fly with her husband and her baby, claimed she was told by the airline the Airbus planes have bassinets that are not safe for babies.
"Six months ago I booked to fly to Toronto on Saturday with my husband, an active soldier in the Army, and baby son, to introduce him to family for the first time. I have been called by British Airways to be told the bassinets in economy and premium economy are not safe to use," the mother said.
When she asked the airline what was she supposed to do with her baby flying along, they suggested she put him in a sling or 'putting some blankets down'. "We booked it before he was born, and have been really looking forward to it. Now my son will have to be held for the whole flight," said the outraged mother.
While a British Airways spokeswoman denied that Haussauer was asked to put her baby on the floor, adding: 'As a responsible airline, we would only ever advise that a baby can safely travel on an adult's lap, in a bassinet or in a suitable car seat'.
The spokeswoman however, added that the airline cannot guarantee the availability of a bassinet on board and they have been in contact with the customer to discuss their options.
