Dubai peeled away the decades on Friday night, as a galaxy of stars from yesteryear descended on Emirates Golf Club.

Culture Beat kicked off the night, treating punctual gig-goers to their 1993 classic Mr. Vain, followed by Eurodance act La Bouche.

While Trinidadian performer Haddaway was content to stick with covers and a handful of old hits – including two renditions of his signature song What is Love – Jenny Berggren from Ace of Base sampled some new material in her set alongside staples like All That She Wants.

The crowd at MixTape Rewind, unsurprisingly bereft of youngsters given its nostalgic theme, partied down to some of the biggest hits of the 1990s, with Snap’s The Power one of the highlights of the night along with No Mercy’s flamenco-infused dance smash Where Do You Go.

Also seen wandering around the venue was another well-known face from the decade – in the UK at least – in the form of nuisance TV mascot Mr. Blobby (himself a chart-topper with the 1993 British Christmas number one Mr. Blobby).

The night was rounded off by the sole ‘80s act on the bill, British pop band Go West, who played a rousing set that included their most famous hit King of Wishful Thinking (from the Pretty Woman soundtrack) and 1984’s infectious We Close Our Eyes.

The night provided a cheery trip down memory lane for revellers, while Dubaians who prefer more contemporary music can look forward to the visits of Jennifer Lopez, Usher and Katy Perry in the coming month.
