Clueless (1995)

Jane Austen classic Emma is breezily updated to the ‘90s in Clueless, easily one of Alicia Silverstone’s most memorable films. Rich high school student Cher considers herself adept at the art of matchmaking and seizes the opportunity of setting up new girl Tai (Brittany Murphy) with a suitable boy. Soon, Tai is so caught up in Cher’s world that she brushes aside the hippy-ish but likeable Travis (Breckin Meyer), imagining herself (through a series of scenarios manipulated by Cher) in love with one of the school’s golden boys Elton (Jeremy Sisto).

But affairs of the heart are never simple; when Cher’s step-brother Josh (Paul Rudd) and a handsome new student Christian (Justin Walker) enter the equation, things get confusing, and Cher realises she’s far from the expert she thought she was.

Alicia Silverstone is charmingly convincing as the ditzy, good hearted Cher and Brittany Murphy stands out as thoughtful and well, clueless, Tai. Even now, the film doesn’t feel dated and is worth a re-visit.

Starring: Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, Breckin Meyer, Jeremy Sisto

Celeb Trivia

Baby, one more time? On New Year’s Eve in 2004, Britney Spears shocked the world and created history when she was married for only 55 hours.

While in Las Vegas, Britney married her childhood friend Jason Alexander with no apparent prenup in sight.

However, the marriage was annulled after 55 hours when Britney’s family found out, placing her alongside the likes of Renee Zwelleger and Kim Kardashian in Hollywood folklore.
