THE FOUR-TIME Grammy award-winning duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are heading to Abu Dhabi on April 25.

Whether the new-school hip-hop artists are still feeling guilty for “robbing” Kenrick Lamar at the Grammy awards last month is anyone’s guess, but there’s no doubt the pair are looking to cash in big from their recent success.

Widespread appeal among audiences and messages of inclusivity helped the pair bag Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance on music’s biggest night in January, but their glory also unleashed a storm of criticism from fans and music critics alike who felt they were undeserving of rap’s biggest honour.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis arrive in Abu Dhabi off the back of one of the biggest international tours of 2013, covering over 277,000 miles at shows all over the world. They have built a huge following during this time for their innovation in hip-hop, particularly their use of lyrics that go against much of the industry’s traditional swagger.

UAE fans will be left wondering if the duo’s hit song Same Love - which promotes equal rights for LGBT people - will be included in the set list for their first Middle Eastern gig.

Macklemore’s music career started in 2000 with the release of the EP dubbed Open Your Eyes and ten years later he teamed up with producer Ryan Lewis. After creating an online buzz thanks to their fresh music style, the duo independently released their first album The Heist in 2012. The album’s lead single, Thrift Shop, eventually reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while second single, Can’t Hold Us, reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart making Macklemore & Ryan Lewis the first duo in music history to have their first two singles reach the top of the pop charts.
