Dubai Sports World will be hosting a one-off evening of Kendo - a martial art form widely-practiced in Japan - tomorrow at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
During the one-hour practice session, a kendoku (group of 10 fighters) from the Japanese Embassy of Dubai’s Kendo Club will spar with 1.2-metre bamboo swords while adorning traditional battle attire.
Meaning ‘Way of The Sword’, Kendo is a relatively modern cult sport descended from kenjutsu - the ancient swordsmanship schools of feudal Japan.
Closely related to fencing, Kendo duels typically take place on a best-of-three points format where a point is awarded to the fighter who lands a direct hit to one of four key areas of their opponent’s body: heart, arm, torso and throat.
Entry to watch the Kendo practice, which runs from 8pm-9pm, is free. For details visit www.dubaisportsworld.ae/.
