Everything was going well for Pakistani expat Ejaz Khawaja, a budding singer and sales executive, who has been in the UAE since 2013 - until he was diagnosed with cancer, just a week before his marriage. Khawaja underwent chemotherapy at Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital. He was asked to get a bone marrow transplant done immediately, the estimated cost of which was around Dh100,000. His brother, who was back home, was identified as a donor and the surgery was completed successfully at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi.
Speaking to us from Karachi he said, "My transplant was done last month; since then, I've been dealing with post-surgical complications. I feel weak now, but I am fighting hard. When my story was published in Khaleej Times on November 25, 2019, several people contacted me and offered help. Some of them helped me raise money for the transplant. I hope to return to the UAE soon and I would love to speak to KT again, and tell readers about my fight against cancer."
