Terrific Challenge Wins a Thriller
DUBAI - Terrific Challenge raced keenly under Richard Mullen to land the Jebel Ali Sprint Prep after a bone-crushing battle against the mount of William Buick Mannjal close home at Jebel Ali Racecourse on Friday.
But trainer Satish Seemar is still not sure as to whether the horse will return to his Grade-1 form after the operation he’s undergone in the neck.
“He’s in and out. He will never be consistent. He will win when he likes to win only,” the Zabeel-based trainer said later.
Regarding his next destination, Seemar said he will enter him for the Jebel Ali Sprint over distance and course on March 19, the race which traditionally qualifies the winner for a line up in the $2m 1200m Dubai Golden Shaheen (Gr-1) on the Dubai World Cup night..
Early in the afternoon, AF Alghabra, ridden by Tadhg O’Shea, was crowned champion of the UAE-Bred Arabians following her narrow victory over the mount of William Buick and stable companion AS Mushrif up the hill. The two horses went strike for strike in the concluding stage of the 1800m trip of the third leg of the Triple Crown before Alghabra touches the wire by a short-head.
Trainer Gillian Duffield was delighted by the performance of her two horses and said: “It was the first run for Alghabra over the extended distance of nine furlongs, but Mushrif ran really a big race.”
Tadhg O’Shea completed a double in the fourth race when the Irishman partnered Satwa Street to an easy victory in the 1000m Romeo Design-sponsored Thoroughbreds Handicap.
Bur Dubai cruised to his second win of the season in the hands and heels of Patrick Dobbs over an extended distance of ten furlongs. The five-year-old gelded son of Gold Case battled back when narrowly beaten by stable companion Call Me George and stormed home impressively ahead of fast finishing Shemoli under William Buick in the Commercial Bank of Dubai-sponsored second race on the card bottom weight Step In Line won the final race of the afternoon.
Wayne Smith rode Swinging Sixties to glory in the 1400m Emirates NBD fifth race for the Jebel Ali-based trainer Dhruba Selvaratnam.
