Nirwan Races to Resounding Victory

DUBAI - Top Irish jockey Tadhg O’Shea beat all odds and led Nirwan to a resounding victory in the 2200m Purebred Arabians Al Maktoum Challenge R-2 (Group-1) in the fourth round of the ongoing Dubai International Racing Carnival at Meydan Racecourse on Thursday.

The Doug Watson-trained eight-year-old by Dormane raced from the centre of the track to beat pace setter Paris Gagner in the concluding stages and hanged on courageously to win by a short-head from fast finishing Nil Blanc.

The Shaikh Hamdan second jokey partnered the second choice Nirwan while the first jockey Richard Hills jumped on Santhal who was said to be in a better form, but the run of the race proved to the contrary.

In the second race, South African trainer Mike de Kock saddled Frosty Secret to win under Kevin Shea in the 1200m Haafhd first Thoroughbreds of the card to the delight of the big crowd.

Frankie Dettori partnered Emirates Champion to glory in the Blue colours of Godolphin in the 2200m Naaqoos third race on the card.

Top performer Leahurst claimed his third straight victory and second of the Dubai International Racing Carnival when led by Ryan Moore to win the 1200m Aqlaam fourth race of the evening.
