McCoy to ride Denman in Gold Cup

LONDON - Tony McCoy has been handed the ride on Denman in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, adding extra spice to the much anticipated re-match with titleholder Kauto Star, the mount of Ruby Walsh.

McCoy, 14-times champion jockey, has yet to ride Denman, but will partner the horse in a big race at Newbury next Saturday ahead of the Gold Cup on March 19.

Paul Nicholls, who trains both horses, told Racing Post readers in his regular Saturday column: “I am pleased this will put an end to the constant speculation about our Gold Cup jockey arrangements and I can get on with the job of trying to get both horses to Cheltenham in peak form.”

The decision is a blow for jockey Sam Thomas who won the 2008 Gold Cup on Denman when the pair beat the Walsh-ridden Kauto Star by seven lengths.

Kauto Star, winner in 2007, got his revenge last March when he became the first horse to regain the Gold Cup crown, easily beating Denman into second place.

Walsh is sticking with Kauto Star after partnering the horse in the King George VI Chase in December to a record fourth victory in succession in the Kempton showpiece.

Thomas has been offered the ride on one of Nicholls’s outsiders for the Gold Cup, 50-1 chance Tricky Trickster. Bookmakers rate Kauto Star the 5-4 favourite with Denman at 2-1 after a brilliant success in the Hennessy Gold Cup in November.

McCoy won the Gold Cup in 1997 on 20-1 chance Mr Mulligan but has been out of luck since. Walsh has won it twice, both times on Kauto Star in 2007 and 2009.
