Joy and Fun won the inaugural Al Quoz Sprint held at Meydan two years ago by pipping the runner-up Fravashi to the winning post by three-quarters of a length, with the third-placed runner, California Flag, a further quarter back.

However, a life-threatening injury has understandably hampered the horse’s progress since that time and Cruz is just relieved to have the eight-year-old gelding back on the big stage after a painstakingly steady rehabilitation.

“He had a very bad injury at Royal Ascot in the United Kingdom – a conjure fracture of his cannon bone,” an emotional Cruz explained.

“We took him back by ambulance to the Coventry stables and got the results back there straight away. Our choices were very limited. “My son suggested we try to go on with this operation, bring him back to Rossdales at Newmarket and get Richard Payne to work on him because he’s done all of the Arab horses.

“At that stage, we were trying to save him and not have him humanely put down. What was running through my mind at that time was just getting him back and then retiring him.

“We took a chance and the operation went very well. I have to thank Rossdales, Richard Payne and the vets that did the operation because it worked for him and they’ve done a great job.”

Cruz readily concedes Joy and Fun hadn’t exactly been the same horse in 2011 he had been back in the first half of 2010, with the six-month absence in between presumably having taken its toll.

However, over time, Joy and Fun has now seemingly returned to something like his prior best, with Cruz adding: “Slowly, he started improving with more confidence and it’s good to get to work with him.

“He’s a very experienced horse and a very nice horse to train. He’s full of guts and tries very hard.

“It’s down to a few horses in the race and, with my runner, if he can run up to what he did in his recent races in Hong Kong, he will definitely measure up.

“He’s got the speed to be up among the leaders and he can also sprint. The horse has got a very good each way chance this coming Saturday.”
