Even the stars of Game of Thrones aren’t immune to wildly speculating about the fates of their favourite characters — just ask the Mother of Dragons herself, Emilia Clarke, who has some theories about the status of Jon Snow (Kit Harington), who met a grisly demise at the hands of his Night’s Watch brothers in the season five finale — or did he?
Despite Harington and showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss insisting that the B****** of Winterfell is dead and gone, the woman behind Daenerys Targaryen isn’t convinced that we’ve seen the last of Jon Snow. “If I have to bet, I’d say it’s a 50/50 chance — there’s some helpful people there who could bring him on back to life,” Clarke pointed out during an interview with MTV, referring to Red Priestess Melisandre (Carice van Houten), who rode back into Castle Black just in time for Jon’s assassination. The Lord of Light has been known to pull some handy resurrections when one of his followers is on hand, as previously demonstrated by Thoros of Myr (Paul Kaye), who was able to bring Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer) back from the dead on several occasions.
But Khaleesi also has her eyes on the prize, and although Clarke admitted that after reading the finale script, “I cried and I called David and Dan and I took Kit out for numerous drinks and was like ‘what the- you’re leaving me? You’re abandoning us?’” she’s also got one good reason to hope the fallen Lord Commander stays out of the picture: “If it means I’m that much closer to getting to the throne, then hey, okay,” she quipped.
But like the rest of her castmates, Clarke said, “I have no idea what’s going to happen,” and her bosses are unlikely to tell her, since “they know that I can’t lie very well.” But can Harington? In a recent interview, the actor said: “I’ve been told I’m dead. I’m dead. I’m not coming back next season. So that’s all I can tell you, really.” The episode’s director, David Nutter, confirmed Jon Snow’s demise in similarly definitive terms, saying, “I can say emphatically that Jon Snow is definitely dead.” For now, at least. Clarke can next be seen as Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys.
