Movie Mania: Animal Kingdom (2010)

This Aussie crime drama, loosely based on a notorious real-life family, has been praised for its Scorsese-esque narrative and was named by Quentin Tarantino as his third favourite film of 2010.

When his mother dies from a heroin overdose, 17-year-old Josh Cody (Frecheville) moves in with his grandmother ‘Smurf’ (Weaver in an Oscar-nominated role), a noted figure in the Melbourne criminal world along with her three beloved sons.

Soon Josh is led into his extended family’s illegal dealings and chaotic lifestyle – while also landing on the wrong side of the psychopathic eldest brother ‘Pope’ (Mendelsohn in a riveting performance).

Attempting to rescue Josh from an inevitably dark future is Detective Senior Sergeant Nathan Leckie (Pearce). But can the teenager resist the gritty lure of his burgeoning gangster life?

Starring: James Frecheville, Jacki Weaver, Guy Pearce, Ben Mendelsohn, Luke Ford, Sullivan Stapleton

One of Britain’s hottest upcoming models meets one of its biggest flourishing singer-songwriters this week.

Since being spotted shopping in low-cost fashion store Primark eight years ago, Londoner Jourdan has risen to become hugely in demand.

The 5’10” beauty has worked for the likes of Calvin Klein and Burberry, as well as appearing in two Beyonce music videos and hosting her own cooking show on Jay Z’s YouTube channel.

Meanwhile chilled out musician Ben released his second album I Forgot Where We Were last month – topping the UK charts and making waves in the States too.

Celeb Trivia

As a teenager, legendary filmmaker Orson Welles dined with Adolf Hitler.

Welles was travelling around Europe during the early days of Nazism, and was on a hike in Austria when his teacher – a sympathiser with the group’s cause – suggested they attend a party rally nearby in Innsbruck.

“The Nazis were a very comical kind of minority party of nuts that no one took seriously at all,” the Citizen Kane writer-director later said in an interview.

The teacher found them a spot at the table of Hitler – “the great man of this tiny little party of cranks” – where Welles sat next to Hitler himself.

“He made so little impression on me that I can’t remember a second of it. He had no personality whatsoever,” said Welles.
