“We have published the handbook already in Arabic and English. Now we have come out with the Malayalam version to reach out to a wider circle as 40 per cent of the food establishments are run by Malayalam-speaking people,” said Al Awadhi.

He said the municipality’s PIC programme became mandatory from January this year. So far, almost 10,000 PICs have been trained and certified in the Level 2 and 3 programmes. The PIC smart check list has been translated into more than 10 languages. Now, training is being offered in Arabic, English and Malayalam.

“While several thousands of PICs had been trained, we still have issues as the right person does not get trained. We require that the manager or the owner who is a decision maker in the establishment is trained. Sometimes, we see the managers nominating someone else who does not have any authority.”
