The breast ultrasound check-up was part of the Pink Caravan organised by the RAK Medical Zone in collaboration with the Family Supreme Council in Sharjah.

“The campaign is aimed to develop women’s awareness on breast tumours, best prevention and treatment techniques, as well as the importance of early screening to detect cancer,” said Dr Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Sager Hospital. He added that more than 300 women have been checked at the Sager Hospital. Dr Suheir Al Ubad, Head of mother and child care section in the Zone, said another Pink Caravan paid a visit to the Maamura Medical centre. “Some 200 women of the centre’s visitors willingly underwent the mammogram scan.”

Meanwhile, a senior official here said that the average age for Emiratis now exceeds 77, basically due to the developing and enhanced health sector and public services all over the UAE.

The announcement was made by Dr Yasser Al Nuaimi, Director of the RAK Medical Zone, during the International Health Day celebrations under the sponsorship of Julphar Pharmaceutical Industries Company. Official statistics show that the average age for Emirati men is 74 and for women it is 78. “Adopting a healthy lifestyle by eating the right food, sports or exercising, and giving up smoking means a better, longer, more comfortable and disease-free life,” he said. The RAK Medical Zone, since February 2009, has initiated a special health programme, the first of its kind in the UAE Ministry of Health, to offer home-based medical services to elderly people wherever they are.
