Of them, 197 doctors were certified as ATLS providers with another 27 doctors achieving the ATLS Instructor status under the supervision of the Shaikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), which was designated as a training centre for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) by the UAE Trauma Committee.

The instructor course is a more advanced undertaking and its successful attendees are certified to train other physicians as ATLS providers, according to Dr Murray Van Dyke, Chair of the Emergency Department at SKMC.

He noted that 53 per cent of the provider course participants were drawn from SKMC and various health institutions that operate under the umbrella of the authority.

Motor vehicle accidents and work related injuries are major causes of death and disability among young people in the UAE as well as throughout the Middle East, said Dr Dyke.

ATLS was introduced in the UAE in 2004. Since then several hundred physicians have successfully completed the ATLS training programme.
