The United Arab Emirates has renewed its commitment to supporting programmes of the UN Higher Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Addressing the UNHRC Donors Conference here on Friday, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva, Obaid Salim Al Zaabi, praised the role played by UNHCR Higher Commissioner, Antonio Guterres, and the agency’s efforts in providing relief to the Syrian refugees and millions of other refugees and displaced people around the world.

Al Zaabi said the UAE is committed to ensuring that its humanitarian priorities are aligned with cooperation with the UNHCR and coordination of its international operations, to protect refugees and to help find lasting solutions to their problems.

He underlined the UAE’s active role in humanitarian efforts and renewed the country’s pledge to contribute $200,000 to the UNHCR operations in 2014.
