Gebrselaisse, who won the race here in 2008 and 2009, clocked two hours, six minutes and 09 seconds.

Kenya’s Chala Beyene Dechase took the second place with a time of 02:06:33, while the third place went to Eshetu Wendimu of Ethiopia (02:06:46).

Gebrselassie may have failed to break his world record, but he gave the Dubai marathon fans enough reasons to cheer with a strong finish despite a back injury.

In the women’s section, Ethiopia’s Mamitu Daska Molisa (02:24:19) took the first prize, while her compatriot Aberu Kebede Shewaye (02:24:26) finished runner up. The third place went to Kenya’s Helena Loshanyang Kirop (02:24:54).

The winners took home $250,000, while the first runners-up received $100,000 and the second runners-up got $50,000.

The 2010 Standard Chartered Dubai International Marathon was held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-president and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

As many as 12,000 runners took part in various sections of the marathon event.
