Belarus has been stripped of their role as co-host of the 2021 ice hockey world championships, the sport’s rulers the IIHF announced on Monday.

The ex-Soviet country had been due to co-host the event with Latvia in May and June.

However, criticism of Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko from EU states and sponsors culminated in Monday’s decision with the IIHF citing the well-being of the teams as their chief motivation.
