Fabio Coentrao equalized in the fourth minute of injury time, allowing Portugal to cling to its fading hopes to qualify.

“We weren’t aggressive enough in defense, so they scored twice,” Portugal coach Paulo Bento said. “We didn’t play well but we had enough opportunities to win.”

Portugal and Israel both have eight points in Group F, four behind leader Russia. Israel remains in second place on goal difference.

Bruno Alves put Portugal ahead in the second minute, but Tomer Hemed, Eden Ben Basat and Rami Gershon gave Israel a 3-1 lead through 70 minutes.

Helder Postiga made it 3-2 in the 72nd.
