Jazira and Bunyodkor Share Honours
ABU DHABI - UAE Pro-League leaders Al Jazira were involved in a goalless draw with Uzbekistan club Bunyodkor in a friendly game at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium on Monday night.
The match was held as a preparation for the AFC Champions League 2010, which kicks off on the January 23. Jazira are placed in Group A, while Bunyodkor are in Group B. The teams are not due to meet until the knockout Stages.
Bunyodkor, who qualified for the second round of the AFC Champions League last season, are in the middle of a 10-day break from the Uzbek League.
The match saw two Brazilian coaches go head-to-hedas. Bunyodkor are coached by Luiz Felipe Scolari, who previously held the positions of coach for several Brazilian teams and English Premiership side Chelsea. Al Jazira are coached by Abel Braga, who has won the Club World Cup with Internacional.
Both coaches have led their teams to win the Copa Libertadores de America; Braga in 2006 with Internacional and Scolari in 1999 with Palmeiras.
Al Jazira should have gone ahead in the 12th minute but captain Ibrahim Diaky fired his shot wide off the post after Oliveira had done the groundwork. Bunyodkor had a chance in the 21st minute but Denilson, who was part of the third-placed Korean side Pohang Steelers in the FIFA Club World Cup held in Abu Dhabi last December, failed to make contact to a through ball as goalkeeper Ali Kasheif charged out to prevent him.
Jazira had another chance two minutes from half-time but Ali Salem shot over the bar. Jazira coach Abel Braga replaced Oliveira with compatriot Rafael Sobis for the second half. Captain Ibrahim Diaky too was replaced by Rashed Abdul Rahman, who took over the captain’s armband. Scolari replaced Denilson in the second half.
Jazira had a close shave in the 61st minute but their defence kept out a dangerous corner by Bunyodkor.
Jazira came close in the 73rd minute but substitute Subait Khater’s shot was blocked by goalkeeper Ignatiy Nesterov.
